The African Education Initiative's Ambassadors Girls Scholarship Program
Girls account for over half of the 38 million children in Africa who do not attend school because of economic hardship or other adverse circumstances. The Ambassadors Girls’ Scholarship Program (AGSP) under the Africa Education Initiative of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide 550,000 scholarships to school children, mostly girls, in sub-Saharan Africa.
The AGSP includes mentoring programs for the children, which contribute to the social and educational development of students and communities, as well as HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness activities. In Southern and Central Africa, Weidemann Associates in partnership with Winrock International oversees implementation of AEI-AGSP with nearly 30 partners in 13 countries in Region 3, including: Angola, Botswana, Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), Gabon, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, São Tomé and Principe, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zambia. In each country, Weidemann and Winrock’s partners utilized their knowledge and engage the local community to assist girls who are economically disadvantaged, orphaned, HIV/AIDS-affected and/or physically handicapped and provide them with scholarships and mentoring support.
In support of the AGSP, Weidemann Associates developed and managed the complex Online Reporting Mechanism used by all Region 3 partners to track the activities and achievements of each scholar. Weidemann Associates also provided programmatic and technical support to our local AEI-AGSP in Botswana and Swaziland.
Weidemann Associates' work on the AEI-AGSP ended in December 2008. For more information on the AEI-AGSP Region 3, please contact mail@weidemannassoc.com.
